Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) provides older Australians with basic support services to help them live safely and independently at home.

About CHSP

As we age, daily tasks can become a bit more challenging. You might need some extra support but still wish to continue living in the comfort of your own home. Accepting help doesn’t mean giving up your independence or leaving your home behind.

CHSP focuses on supporting you to maintain your independence by assisting you to do things for yourself, rather than doing them for you.

Is CHSP right for me?

Eligibility for the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) depends on your age and level of support needs.

If you find daily activities becoming difficult and believe some assistance could enhance your health and wellbeing, CHSP may be a suitable option for you.

You may be eligible if you are:

  • 65 years or older (or 50 years or older if you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person), or

  • 50 years or older (or 45 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people) and on a low income, homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

An aged care assessment will help determine your eligibility and the specific CHSP services that best meet your needs.

How do I get an assessment?

To qualify for an aged care assessment, you’ll need to meet specific eligibility requirements.

You can start by answering a few quick questions using our eligibility checker tool. If you qualify, you’ll be able to apply for an assessment immediately.

Once your application is approved, you’ll be referred for an in-person assessment, typically conducted in the comfort of your own home.
