The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for Australians with disability, their families and carers.
The NDIS supports people with disability to build skills and capability so they can participate in the community and employment.
To access the NDIS people with a disability will need to meet the following criteria:
- Live in an NDIS trial site or transition area
- Have a permanent disability that reduces their ability to participate effectively in activities or perform tasks that affect their capacity for social and economic participation
- Are likely to require support under the NDIS for a lifetime
The scheme is for any Australian citizen (or resident or permanent visa holder) with permanent disability that significantly affects their day-to-day activities who is under 65 years of age when they make their application to the scheme.
